Phonics Rules:
1. When a word has ONE vowel it usually says its short sound.
2. When a word has TWO vowels, the first vowel says its long sound, and the second vowel is silent.
- Marking vowels:
- Short vowels get a smiley
- Long vowels get a straight stick (cross out silent vowels)
4. ck follows a short vowel sound, ke follows a long vowel sound
5. A suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a work to make a new work. The word we start with is called the root word.
6. Syllable Rules
- Syllables are word parts. Long words are divided into syllables to help sound and read them.
- Long words may be divided between double consonants. In this case, the division keeps the first vowel short.
- Ask your child to show you how to put your hand under your chin to help you count syllables!
